Redefining Richness: Lessons on Living Fully from the Wisest Among Us

Redefining Richness

What does a rich lifestyle mean to you?

Working as a clinical dietitian in a community hospital, the majority of patients I see are over 65 years old. Occasionally, and more often than I would have thought, I see patients between 97-102 years old! During my visits, I like to hear words of wisdom and a lot of them are more than happy to share.

A few common themes I hear are, “never stop moving,” “spend time with your loved ones” and “keep learning.” So, every day, I try to be a little bit better. I aim to move more, spend more time with my loved ones and continue learning. This shift in mindset has really challenged me to stop wishing for things to happen to me and has taught me to go after what I really want. And be sincerely grateful. A lot of the patients I see are extremely ill and working in a hospital has been very emotionally draining for me, but this time of my life is one I will always cherish.

I have two quotes that I like to refer back to.

“Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.” - Earl Nightingale

“Focus on the good and the good gets better.” Abraham Hicks

Let’s redefine what “rich” truly means. Rich in health, rich in mindfulness, rich in movement, rich in friendship. I believe that true wealth isn’t measured by the numbers in your bank account but by the richness of your health and the mindfulness you bring to every aspect of your life.
